Martin Puryear was born in 1941 in Washington, D.C., and was educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and Yale University.  He received a MacArthur Fellowship award in 1989, the Gold Medal in Sculpture by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2007, and has recently been awarded the Presidential Medal of the Arts.  Internationally acclaimed as a printmaker and sculptor, Puryear has created a distinctive body of work that defies categorization. Serenely quiet and poetic, his work explores natural forms.  His work examines identity, culture, and history.  Puryear’s sculpture combines modernist abstraction with traditions of crafts and woodworking, in shapes informed by the natural world and by ordinary objects.  Puryear has exhibited his work throughout the world, with public commissions in Europe, China, Japan and the United States. In 2007, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, organized a 30-year retrospective exhibition of his work which traveled to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
